How to Learn the Skill of Delayed Gratification

Have you heard of the marshmallow test? Pop a kid in a room by themselves. Give them one marshmallow. Tell them that they can eat it. But also tell them that if they haven’t eaten the marshmallow when you return they will be given two marshmallows to eat.

The marshmallow test is investigating delayed gratification.

As you will see in the video, the kids really want to eat that marshmallow. They are seeking pleasure. As adults we know this desire all too well. It’s a basic human instinct.

It’s also the biggest obstacles to losing weight.

Mastering delayed gratification is key to weight loss. When you do it using Will Power, it’s feels just like those kids were acting. We start to focus on the thing we are denying ourselves, we feel anxious and maybe even out of control.

Delayed gratification is a skill that can be learned AND you can learn to do it without using Will Power.

One tool you can use to hone the skill of delayed gratification is to practice Future Dreaming.

How do you think those kids managed to stop themselves from guzzling that big white fluffy marshmallow? They were Future Dreaming about two big white fluffy marshmallows.

You can do the same.

Future Dreaming comes from a place of abundance. It may take some practice, but once you can do it, it’s a LOT of fun and it will help you create the results you want in life.

Imagine what life will be like if you lose the weight. If you repeatedly delay your gratification, who will you become? if you don’t eat that pleasurable food in the moment, how would your life be different? Think of what you would look like, how would you feel, how would you act differently?

If this creates an abundant emotion for you, focus your mind on this when you want to say “no” to food or alcohol.
